General Country Information
The United Arab Emirates comprises of seven emirates with a population of almost 4,5 million in total, although the indigenous population only amounts about 11 % of the total. The UAE was formed as a federation of the seven emirates in 1971. The rulers of the emirates comprise of the Federal Supreme Council that elects the president, currently Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed al-Nahyan from Abu Dhabi, and the vice-president, now Sheikh Rashid bin Said al-Maktoum from Dubai. According to unofficial estimates 66% of the population is Muslim, while the literacy rate is estimated at 77 %.
