General Country Information Libya’s population is almost 5.7 million in total. Colonel Mu’ammar Qaddafi is the leader of the country since a coup d’etat in 1969. In 1977 Gaddafi published The Green Book in which he inventively argues that “the press is a means of expression for society: it is not a means of expression for private individuals or corporate bodies. Therefore, logically and democratically, it should not belong to either one of them.” The vast majority of Libyans is Sunni Muslim; over 88% of the population is literate.
