General Country Information The Hashemite King Abdullah I gained semi-autonomous control of Jordan in 1921, when after the British created Jordan after World War I. In 1948 Jordan gained independence. In 1999, King Abdallah II, the son of King Hussein, assumed the throne following his father's death. Jordan has a population of nearly 6 million, of which 65% to 70% are from Palestinian origins. Due to the war in Iraq about 700,000 Iraqi refugees reside in Jordan.
