MAURITANIA: State TV journalists fired
Posted October 16th, 2008
NOUAKCHOTT, October 15, 2008 (MENASSAT) – Sources at Mauritania state TV say the new manager appointed by the ruling military junta took the decision to remove journalist Sidi Ould al-Amjad who was responsible for the program "Tahet al-Daw" (Under the spotlight). This procedure comes only a few days after the discharge of the General Manager of Mauritanian TV, Limam al-Sheikh Oul al-Al, who was the first personality to be appointed by the new regime on August 6th.
These successive dismissals come after a controversial episode of the program, which hosted supporters and opposition figures of the coup, including former minister Ould Abdul Kader who violently attacked General Mohammed Abdul Aziz, calling him "the source of all the problems in the country, and a danger to democracy and civil peace in Mauritania." He also accused the general of creating his own militias that include people from outside Mauritania.
Sidi Ould al-Amjad was removed from another talk show after a complaint from the head of the opposition Ahmad Ould Dadah. The episode in question caused many critical reactions from the majority supporting the Mauritanian military regime, while its direct consequence was the discharge of the GM who is a relative of General Abdul Aziz and one of his trusted aides.
